Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows by Hans Zimmer.

"I don't think there's much difference with this score and the score for the first film, but maybe there's a difference within me because I really enjoyed this"

Sherlock Holmes returns for his second film with A Game Of Shadows. This time they are after the most notorious of bad guys, Dr. Moriarty. Guy Ritchie is still the director and Robert Downey Jr. plays Sherlock Holmes with his sidekick Dr. Watson played by Jude Law. The score is composed by Hans Zimmer.

When I first reviewed the original score of the first film, it's fair to say I didn't like what I heard. It was just too silly for my taste and I couldn't get into the proper mindset. I didn't take the score for what it was supposed to be. So it is with caution I went into the second score, but with an open mind this time.

I was awakened.

This is not your typical Hans Zimmer score, but I think you already know that. There are cues here that might make you scream with anger or have a great laugh about it. Dr. Moriarty is one evil guy and Zimmer has written a theme for him (or at least I think it's for him) in the Shadows trilogy of cues. I like the theme, it's dark and quite different from the Sherlock Holmes main theme.

The Sherlock Holmes theme is present in cues like 'I See Everything' and I have to admit I like it now compared to the first time I heard it. Some of the queues are as quirky and funny as in the first film. 'It's So Overt It's Covert' is the Sherlock Holmes main theme with a Romanian twist. 'Romanian Wind' is best explained as a Romanian folksy bluegrass track. 'He's All Me Me Me' is another quirky rendition of the Sherlock Holmes theme.

Even though the weird tracks are quite fun, they are not my favorites. I love 'Tick Tock (Shadows - Part 2), a dark and moody theme that probably represents Dr. Moriarty. Then there's 'Zu Viele Fuchse Fur Euch Hansel' which is an excellent Zimmer-esque action track. 'The End?' is like an excerpt of the excellent track from the first film 'Psychological Recovery... 6 Months'.

I even like the remix at the end 'Romani Holiday (Antonius Remix).

Conclusion

I don't think there's much difference with this score and the score for the first film, but maybe there's a difference within me because I really enjoyed this. It's quirky, fun, adventurous and daring. The first Sherlock Holmes score was nominated for Best Score at the Oscars. This year it won't be because of the use of previous themes. Nevertheless it's a fun score so be sure to pick it up.
