I Am Number Four Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score I Am Number Four by Trevor Rabin.
"There are some worthwhile cues on here that represents the good times of Hollywood and Rabin"
I Am Number Four is about an alien sent to earth as a child along with eight others to escape an invading race, the Mogadorians. The bad guys eliminates one by one in turn and our hero Alex Pettyfer is number four. I already knew from the outset that this film wouldn't surprise me and it didn't. I really didn't like it very much, it was too simplistic and I didn't care for the characters. The music by Trevor Rabin was almost non-existent in the film, but I am always highly anticipating a Rabin release and this is no exception.

Changing Industry
Trevor Rabin has had a wonderful career in music as a pop artist and film composer. He was one of the composers I truly enjoyed. He was a master at emotion themes and power themes. I loved his style, his guitar and I was always looking forward to his next release. Over the years, other composers have taken up more time than Trevor.
Trevor's style hasn't changed much, but maybe the industry has. I'm pretty sure it's harder now as directors don't care much for themes and beautiful film music and the composer has less a saying of what's going on. This has been a trend in Trevor's music as well although "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Get Smart" has entertained me in recent years.
In I Am Number Four he creates a score not to enjoy on it's own, but rather with the film. Personally I didn't feel the music had an impact in the film itself which is a shame. There are some emotional moments like when Henry dies, perfectly portrayed in the cue 'Henry Dies' a very emotional way of scoring.
Mostly you have cues that I just don't care for like 'Welcome To The Jungle' and 'Water Vision'. They do have Trevor's fast string section that he use in a lot of scores, but when there's no theme, no drive, no direction, it doesn't do it for me.
Conclusion
I am glad this score got released. There are some worthwhile cues on here that represents the good times of Hollywood and Rabin, even though it was only a decade ago. I wish Trevor had more time to make this score the way he wanted it to be, like more of the great guitar sound in 'Getting to Know Sarah'. Unfortunately it doesn't quite deliver on all counts, but it's certainly far from being the worst score Trevor ever created.
