This is a review of the motion picture score for The Last of the Mohicans by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman.

This is a collaboration of two amazing composers, Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman who has composed to over 160 movies and TV series in total. Some of the most known Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman scores are The Dark Crystal, MacGyver, Gettysburg and Dragonheart. This score has been figuring on the top selling charts for soundtrack since its release, and I’ll tell you why below. This is the track list of The Last of the Mohicans:

  1. Main Title
  2. Elk Hunt
  3. The Kiss
  4. The Glade Part II
  5. Fort Battle
  6. Promentory
  7. Munro’s Office - Stockade
  8. Massacre - Canoes
  9. Top Of The World
  10. The Courier
  11. Cora
  12. River Walk And Discovery
  13. Parlay
  14. The British Arrival
  15. Pieces Of A Story
  16. I Will Find You (By Clannad)

There are 16 tracks on this for a total play time of 54:53. The first 9 tracks are composed by Trevor Jones and tracks 10 to 15 are composed by Randy Edelman. The last track is made by the Irish musical group known as Clannad. The score commits itself to being epic on a small scale. It was made with a 10 piece orchestra I believe, but it has never sounded better. The main theme by Trevor Jones is just beautiful and he continues to dazzle with his drums and violins. It’s interesting how the soundtrack is divided into 2 parts, because you can really feel the change at track 10 and beyond when Randy Edelman. They do complement each other well. Trevor Jones has the part of the inspirational war monger while Randy Edelman does the sweeping softer songs.

It is no mistake that this score is still very popular and high in demand. I just wonder if they are able to make copies fast enough for the hungry public. Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman have created a wonderful score which sounds great on and off the movie. It is music you can listen to again and again at high volume and dream back to frontier times. From the powerful “Main Title”, to the battling sounds of “Fort Battle”, to the beautiful dreamy sounds of “Cora”, this score has it all. If you don’t have it, you need to get it as they don’t come much better than this. It is simply a spectacular piece of music from start to finish. Listen to The Last of the Mohicans below:

I love this film and one of reasons why is the score. The music really stands out and fits the film like a glove. My favorite bit of music is at the end of the film when Great Serpent’s son goes after Cora’s sister and Hawkeye shots Cora’s suitor in the head.

Whenever you hear any of the music from this film, you recognize its source immediately.

Love the score for the film.. I agree with above.. One of the main reasons I love the film was due to the score.. Up to a few years ago I use to listen to the soundtrack when going to sleep.. Definitely up there with Requiem for a Dream and The Da Vinci Code’s Chevaliers De Sangreal..

Madcrow’s last blog post..Hi - Yo, Silver! The Lone Ranger is heading to the silver screen..

Film-Book: I’m in awe over how good this soundtrack is. Cora is my favorite theme from this album in addition to the main theme. I always get teary eyed when I hear that theme. Just beautiful.

Ken: It certainly should be! Just out of curiosity, what else is on your list?

Madcrow: Yep, I’m in total agreement. It is a good movie on its own, but I wonder how much the score really meant to it. Requiem for a Dream, that’s an interesting one. I think the score have done better than the movie financially. Brilliant stuff. The movie was great too. I love The Da Vinci Code score as well. Although I found the movie interesting and enjoyable, I have enjoyed the score a lot more.

I wouldn’t do this except you asked :)
