Soundtrack Review: Step Up 2: The Streets (2008)

Step Up 2: The Streets, soundtrack, cd cover, cover art, r&b, hip-hop

LABEL: Atlantic / Wea

Release Date: February 8th 2008

From Saturday Night Fever to Fame, Flashdance, Footloose, Dirty Dancing and Save The Last Dance, dance movies have always been very popular in mainstream audiences. However to be a successful dance movie, it has to have a great soundtrack. There’s no way these movies would be as popular without songs like “Stayin’ Alive”, “Fame” or “Footloose”. I admit it; I saw Footloose and Dirty Dancing and I loved it including the soundtracks. I even saw Save the Last Dance which I enjoyed, and also Honey for obvious reasons.

Step Up 2: The Streets is the sequel to a movie I have never heard of, but according to the Box Office Mojo, the 1996 movie Step Up earned a lifetime gross of $65 million. That’s quite a substantial chunk of change and puts it in 5th place of all dance movies from 1977 to present (inflation not included). So of course a sequel was made and it is opening in cinemas nationwide on February 14th, Valentine’s Day.

This is a hip-hop and R&B album with some of the biggest stars today. The track list:

  1. Flo Rida (Feat T-Pain) - Low
  2. Missy Elliott - Shake Your Pom Pom
  3. Cherish (feat Yung Joc) - Killa
  4. Plies (feat Akon) - Hypnotized
  5. Cassie - Is It You
  6. Trey Songz (feat Plies) - Can’t Help But Wait
  7. T-Pain (feat Teddy Verseti) - Church
  8. Missy Elliott - Ching-A-Ling
  9. Enrique Iglesias - Push
  10. Cupid (feat B.O.B) - 369
  11. Bayje - Impossible
  12. Sophia Fresh (feat Jay Lyriq) - Lives In Da Club
  13. Scarface (feat Trey Songz) - Girl You Know
  14. KC - Say Cheese
  15. Brit & Alex - Let It Go
  16. Montana Tucker, Sikora, Denial - Ain’t No Stressin

It is pretty much filled to the brim with the latest hip-hop and R&B tracks. Total playtime is 1:00:22. I have to admit, I am not a fan or rap, R&B and hip-hop so when I saw the track list I was naturally sceptical. I’ve learned something, well… remembered something I learned a long time ago. Never judge a book by its cover. I’ve heard the soundtrack countless times now, and it is electrifying, it really is. It’s like someone took all the hip-hop songs I love the most and put it in this little album.

Am I going into a mid-life crisis I wonder? I seriously don’t know, but Step Up 2: The Streets is one of those gems you just stumble upon on a lazy Friday afternoon not knowing what hit you. I don’t believe there is such a thing as guilty pleasures, but if it was, this would be on top of my list. Listen to it below:

9.5

Oh, that’s what it was then. I must have been looking at the girl while listening to the album. Explains a lot ;)

I watched Step Up, the original film and it’s an entertaining movie. Channing Tatum showed tremendous talent, being a model he is also a good dancer, perhaps the soundtrack made the dance routines even better. I so look forward to this sequel!

Hmm, I think I have to watch Step Up now, everyone is telling me how good it is. I will have to watch Step Up 2 as the soundtrack is just playing in my mind, it can’t be bad.

I will definitely be watching this movie one day but I am not rushing to see it because it is regular Hollywood fare. Yes the rain chick is hot but she doesn’t warrant paying ten bucks for a movie ticket.Since this soundtrack is a compilation of many artists, I had a feeling it would be above average.

Yep… one day. For now I am happy just listening to the soundtrack which I initially thought would be terrible.

I just got back from watching this movie…can ANYONE PLEASE tell me the artists or songs from the ending dance mix?

I haven’t seen the movie yet. Can anyone help Ando out?

Ando, the last 2 songs are:
- Ludacris - The Potion
- Timberland ft. Justin T., Missy Elliot, Dr. Dré

Enjoy them ;)
grtz

Srr I forgot to add the title of the last song:

- Bounce - Timberland ft. Justin T., Missy Elliot, Dr. Dré

regards

Ooh thanks for that Matt!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I will have to get those now.

OK I GOT THOSE SONGS…BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW THE NAME OF THE ROCK SONG AT THE VERY END OF THE MOVIE…IT WAS LIKE THE VERY LAST INSTRUMENTAL THEY DANCED TO….REALLY WANT TO KNO BECAUSE I DANCE AND I WOULDNT MIND PUTTING THAT IN ONE OF MY ROUTINES.

Anyone knows? Matt?

bro it was rage against the machine

Thanks Scott!

Too much, Too much, I love this site. Just listening to the sample tracks I can concur with you yet again Soundtrack Geek. That song “Low” is an ear worm. I just can’t get it out of my head.

As far as that request for the Timbaland song, I am always a fan of practically anything Timbaland does. He is ubiquitous. Anyone who mixes something that sounds like a burp in one song and the sound of Godzilla’s roar in another and makes them enough of a hit that they get heavy rotation on radio stations is a musical prankster with genius skills.

I wish he would make a soundtrack as I consistently look for instrumentals of anything he does. Just listen to last 40 seconds of “Can I get A” on a Hard Knocked Life by Jay Z and you’ll see what a digital mastermind he is.

Again like a broken record or a scratched disc: Great Blog!

The whole soundtrack is just ear candy. I’m afraid of my eardrums I really am. I love writing for this blog, I love soundtracks and movie scores so much. It’s a privelege.

You know, I never really listen to much of Timbaland or R&B and rap in general. The thing is though that since starting this blog in December I kind of become a little kid again, just enjoying myself and the music.

Thanks again for all the comments! I almost jumped out of my chair when I saw the comment-mania you got going on here, but don’t stop. I love your comments hehe. I’ll send you an email soon.

Man, if you happen to come across the dance mix they used “under the rain,” hook me up please? That one the shiznit right there. Thanks. Great review! Cheers!

Check your local p2p network ;)

I am sure the soundtrack rocks, but I would never see the film.

Nick Plowman’s last blog post..A Japanese Film Festival: Cinema Nouveau

I will see the film based on this soundtrack. No film, whatever subject can be bad if it has a soundtrack like this. In fact, I think it will be an amazing experience. An explosion of visuals and audio…

It may not be Nick Plowman’s cup of tea but it actually was a very entertaining yet cheesy movie. I think it accomplished its goals by distracting me for two hours and loving it. I fell in love with the WHOLE soundtrack upon first heard and it’s not a bad movie if your looking to entertain yourself for a few hours.

For what it’s worth, I think you are right. I don’t think the movie is a masterpiece, but it’s probably pure and raw entertainment.

hey to all, just wanted to say this movie is great and so is the music. To the people who are saying they like the music but are not going to go see the movie, come on, i mean, you have to see it because that is what makes the music that much better, as it does the other way around. So go see it please.

Hear hear! Couldn’t agree with you more Nat. Go see the movie everyone!

Just finished watching this film last night. Great dance sequences, nothing special story-wise.

Film-Book dot Com’s last blog post..Word of the Week - Cinephile

What story? Put a few hot dancers in there doing some fancy moves to great music and you can enjoy yourself for 90 minutes :)

True. There is only one hot dancer of note in this film in my opinion and she is on the poster.

I’m sure you can find whatever you are looking for in one of the p2p networks. Shouldn’t be too hard actually, but support this great soundtrack by buying it if you can.

the song where Moose say’s “it’s the new style” can’t be rage against the machine, cuz the beat is completley different, i was checking to make sure. maybe it’s some kind of a remix ?

It might just be, must listen to it again ;)

What is the name of the song at the part when the credits were going on..it sounds pretty cool and i want the song. Can someone plzz tell me what that song is?Help!
