Movie Composers Preview 2008 – Part III

Lalo Schifrin
This guy is incredible. He’s been composing since the 50’s. The Enter the Dragon score is such a great score and who can forget the Mission: Impossible theme? Ah, memories… but let’s focus on the future shall we? In 2008 he is scoring for Love and Virtue, a drama described as a magical, haunting, epic adventure. Drama you say? Well anyway, it should be interesting because John Malkovich, Peter O’Toole, Saffron Burrows, Michael Madsen and Daryl Hannah stars in this movie directed by Raoul Ruiz. Release date: 2008
John Ottman
John Ottman, also known as scores-for-comic-movie-guy has signed on for scoring Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie starring Tom “Mad-as-hell-but-we-love-you-anyway-for-Top-Gun” Cruise. When I think of Valkyrie and war I always remember the great scene from Apocalypse Now, but this movie is about another war, World War II and the infamous plot to assassinate Adolf “even-more-mad-than-Tom-Cruise” Hitler. Should be a nice one to watch and listen to. Release date: October 3rd 2008.
John Murphy
Last year, I got really familiar with his work, especially 28 Weeks Later and the score for Sunshine, which was one of my top 10 scores of 2007. His style is really unique, love or hate him, his scores gives you something. In 2008 he is scoring for a movie called Crossing Over. It is directed by Wayner Kramer, starring Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ray Liotta and Ashley Judd. I can’t tell you how excited I am every time I hear his name in relation to a movie. Looks like a good movie as well, and the anticipation factor is sky high. Release date: June 13th 2008.
Trevor Morris
This Canadian composer has mostly scored for TV series such as E-Ring, Justice and The Tudors. I am surprised that The Tudors didn’t get nominated for best original score, as it was one of the best TV scores last year. In addition to score for season 2 of The Tudors, he is scoring for a movie called Krews, directed by Hilbert Hakim. All I know about it is that it is a drama movie, and Trevor Morris can do drama. His last movie was a horror however. Judging by The Tudors, this could be a winner. Release date: 2008
Ilan Eshkeri
Last year he made a score so great that it almost made into my Top 10 list of 2007. The movie I am talking about is of course Stardust. I remember when I watched the movie, the music was so fun to listen to and it pumped my adrenalin a little bit extra. He is also nominated for the Breakout Composer of the Year Award by the International Film Music Critics. I can see his future and it’s a great one. All eyes are on him and his 2008 project called Freedom Within the Heart. It’s being directed by Mike Mahon and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Vinnio Jones. It’s an epic adventure set in the age of marauding Vikings. Sounds like fun! Release date: Possibly 2008
