Retro Wednesday - Real Genius
Hello SoundtrackGeek readers, I have the privilege of being a guest blogger on SoundtrackGeek.com. I go by Fox. I found this site looking for quotes for Point Break but found the soundtrack review here and bought the soundtrack instantly. I have been hooked ever since.
Real Genius is a favorite movie of geeks so it is perfect that it find its place here on this site. The movie revolves around a bunch super smart and creative college science majors working on a project involving lasers. This is very intense work so their creative outlet is a series of innovative projects that extend over into the realm of creative pranks. It is a “moral imperative” to use your intelligence in ways that will amaze your friends and sometimes frustrate your competitive fellow colleagues. Val kilmer is, dare I say, effervescent in his confident self assured comic performance and Michelle Meyrink steals the movie with her unique portrayal of the quintessential Geek Girl.
Soundtracks can be a hit or miss affair for teenage comedies but this one shines. What is really amazing is that even though the movie has the tried and true popular songs like
One night love affair - Bryan Adams
All she wants to do is dance - Don Henley
Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears
The songs by the not too well known artists are given almost music video like passages in the film that showcase them in a way that bonds them with the movie and its characters and your love of it. I feature the main 2 songs in the You Tube video. Unfortunately this is one of those unreleased soundtrack gems that you can most likely piece together from various places.
There are also passages on instrumental synthesizer music I find particularly memorable and nostalgic for an 80’s movie. No doubt the work of Thomas Newman who did the music score part. The first song in the opening credits is by Carmen McRae and it is a jazzy tune that lets you know you are not just watching another formulaic teenage comedy. The last song played in the movie is “Everybody wants to rule the world ” and it fits in perfectly as an ending song.

I liked this movie pretty well. I watched because of my Val Kilmer Movie Month, but if it did not have Val Kilmer in it I think I would probably have never seen it. It was definitely classic 80s and the music was just as you say. I kind of liked that about it even though I did not feel the movie was very well made.
I haven’t seen it yet myself, but as a geek I have to see it of course. I wonder how it stands up to Weird Science.
No comparison. This movie is not about using science to make a hot girl or deal with sibling rivalries.
You’ll be in for a treat. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts afterwards
