Well this is interesting don’t you think? If it1s true that is. It isn’t quite official yet, but Scott Bettencourt of FSM broke the news today. Here’s what he had to say:

“(Alexandre Desplat) …has signed for one his most challenging and highest-profile assignments yet, the penultimate entry in the Harry Potter saga.”

He says in the FSM forum that his source is reliable, but we’ll have to wait for further confirmation. If true, then honestly, who saw this coming? Actually in retrospect it’s weird no one mentioned him at all.

Perhaps it is a disappointment for some that John Williams won’t come back, but I suspected this since he is probably too busy with other projects. Besides, Tintin was just officially put to John Williams name.

Now I think this is pretty cool actually, especially since he did such a wonderful job on The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The question remains however, since he pretty much ignored everything Carter Burwell did in the first Twilight movie, will he ignore John Williams legendary themes from Harry Potter? What would you all think about that?

Right now, I’m still trying to process the news and waiting for confirmation. Harry Potter without Williams themes? Hmm…

Well ok, so he is he Wolfman and only has one expression, but if you look carefully, he smirks on the inside. In November I reported that Danny Elfman had left the project and Paul Haslinger was brought in to replace him.

It is now clear that The Wolfman is a good and proper mess and latest news is that Danny Elfman’s rejected score is re-instated and Haslinger is out.

WAIT WHAT!?

Yes ladies and gentleman, that is the word. Film Score Monthly has this to say:

“Film music fans should be pleased to learn that his previously rejected score for the long-delayed remake of The Wolf Man has been reinstated.”

The bomb has dropped!

Cinemusic has more:

“Some if not most of Elfman’s music is back in the film Haslinger is out and additional composers have been brought back in to stitch it all together using ideas from Elfman’s material. One name is Conrad Pope. Pope, and one other unnamed composer, will contribute about 25-30 minutes of additional music. Elfman, meanwhile, is busy recording his score for Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, and therefore unavailable to write additional music and or revise cues.”

So to recap. Danny Elfman is back in! Oh yes! At least today because tomorrow, who knows? Will the rejected who was reinstated be rejected yet again?

What we can expect if the current situation holds: The Wolfman by Danny Elfman, Conrad Pope & ?. Perhaps around 20-30 minutes of score from Elfman and 25-30 minute of score from Conrad Pope and the mystery man (or woman). Maybe it will be Deborah Lurie who many were surprised didn’t replace Elfman in the first place. Time will tell! The movie will be out February 12, 2010, or so they say…

Just thought I’d share a couple of clips from the score to Alice in Wonderland by Danny Elfman. It sounds like the dynamic trio Depp, Burton and Elfman are at it again. It’s a winner folks! UPDATED! Brian Tyler has confirmed that none of his scores were submitted for the Academy this year. His scores for films in 2009 are The Killing Room, Dragonball: Evolution, Fast & Furious, Middle Men, The Final Destination and Law Abiding Citizen. I will update further when I know more. Thanks for the heads up Brian!

Other composers not so lucky are Marco Beltrami who got In The Electric Mist and Knowing ineligible for the Oscars.

Another strange exclusion is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by Nicholas Hooper.

Angels & Demons by Hans Zimmer is not eligible as well. There is a rule that goes like this: “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible”. Angels & Demons used themes from The Da Vinci Code, but then why didn’t Terminator: Salvation by Danny Elfman, Star Trek by Michael Giacchino and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen got disqualified? I think the real reason is probably Zimmer’s use of more composers. Strange then that many of the scores deemed eligible are written and composed by more than one composer.

Critics favorites Pope Joan by Marcel Barsotti and The Red Canvas by James Patterson are also ineligible.

December is almost here and do you know what that means? It’s Avatar time! Or more importantly if you are a soundtrack geek such as me, James Horner time!

I have been highly anticipating this for some time and now it’s almost here. Yesterday Atlantic Records revealed the soundtrack with a full song by James Horner!

Aren’t you excited?! The sample sounds fantastic, but what is puzzling is that the track “Into the Na’vi World” isn’t on the official soundtrack.

So who cried wolf!? Was it you? Well see the Wolfman here on the left? He looks pretty pissed off. So I guess you’ve all heard. Danny Elfman will no longer write the music for The Wolfman. Correction, he actually did. Rumors says he wrote a full score and because of scheduling conflicts he (un)conveniently had to leave the project.

Now who believes this story? I don’t see any hands. Good, because I don’t believe it either. The story about Danny Elfman leaving is absolutely true though, but I meant the part about scheduling conflicts. What is also true is that Paul Haslinger has taken the job to save Wolfman’s hairy ass (excuse my language).

So let me get this straight. You have a great composer in Danny Elfman, the director loves his work, we are talking gothic grandness here. Danny boy creates a full score, everyone should be happy right? Not so in wolf-land. The real wolves at the top of the food chain has decided differently. Have you all seen The Wolfman trailer? Did you see Danny Elfman’s name in the credits? Oh yeah, he is still there. So now that you have all seen it, I have one question for you. Does it look very gothic or would you say a modern contemporary look? To me it looks like the modern crap that has been thrown at our precious eyes in the last few years. It’s all about being cool, yeah we need a rock grunge soundtrack for this. Elfman’s gothic  style is for grandpa (apparently). THAT’S what I think the real reason is, but who listens to me… sob…

Anyway the evil deed is done and maybe one day we will find out what has happened. Hopefully someone will find that rejected score by Danny Elfman and release it to the public. I demand it!
