Daniel Schweiger over at Film Music Magazine has a new podcast featuring an excellent interview with Hollywood composer legend Harold Faltermeyer. In it he talks about his past, his sound, and that is something everyone should listen to.

What is even greater is the following line I read before I started listening to the interview:

“Credit uber geek director and 80’s film score fan Kevin Smith, who had the cojones to pull Faltermeyer back into the game with a score that sounds like he never left it. At once retro and vibrantly fresh, “Cop Out” has everything that a Faltermeyer fan has been craving, from its immediately catchy theme-bounce to rhythmic comedy and a Latin beat.”

Did that just make you go all Axel F?

It’s hilarious when he talks about the story of the Top Gun theme with Tom Cruise, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer just shouting to him to play the theme, and he just had the basic rhythm. Harold was sweating and when he was done with the short motif, he didn’t know what to play because he hadn’t thought of a middle part yet. He was singing and playing while waving all hands and feet! He just made it up on the spot and it worked great. Jerry told him so, but also told him to get the guitar sounds ready now. Harold said no problem I will do it tomorrow and Jerry said: I meant now. It was midnight!

Imagine Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer and Harold Faltermeyer getting back together? Harold Faltermeyer said in the interview that he would love the chance to work with Jerry again.

Fascinating stuff where he talk about the score to Cop Out being a mix between his old synths and new Hollywood style ane mentions many themes and cues. Can’t wait! Oh and he also has 2 new offers for movies and he says he will take 1 months rest (at least), then decide what to do.

I was shocked when I heard that Kevin Smith had gotten in touch with Harold Faltermeyer and wanted him to write a score for his latest project Cop Out starring Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Seann William scott. Shocking good news that is! I knew Harold was coming back to Hollywood, but I didn’t expect something of this magnitude. I think the project is perfect for him to get back to his old game. People might say that his old game doesn’t work in 2010. Bah! Of course it will! The movie will be out on February 26th by the way. I’m sure Kevin smith and Harold F. will be the perfect partners and so I have created a list of my top 15 reasons why Harold Faltermeyer will rule in 2010:

Kuffs is a movie a lot of people haven’t heard of. Starring Christian Slater, it’s a great mix of action and comedy which is Harold’s specialty.

Whatever you might think of Arnold Schwarzenegger, this was a very cool movie and made even better by Harold who produced a wonderful score. The theme which you can hear in ‘Intro-Bakersfield’ is simply incredible.

04. Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis is still an action god and he can be one again in Cop Out. With Bruce Willis running around shooting things backed up with Harold F’s score must be a thing of beauty. Bring it on!

Let’s do it! One of the most awesome buddy cop movies in existence has to be Tango & Cash starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. The score is fantastic, particularly the theme to Tango which you can here in ‘Bus Chase – Cocaine’. This movie is probably the biggest reason for Harold Faltermeyer to get a scoring gig in Kevin Smith’s latest project Cop Out.

Top Gun is one of the better male testosterone action movies out there starring Tom Cruise as the craziest of them all. Propelled by Harold Faltermeyer’s legendary score it’s a spectacular show starting with the Top Gun Anthem. Overshadowed by the also excellent various artists album, this score has never been officially released despite demand that it should. I demand it!

You didn’t think I would forget did you? One of the most recognizable and best synth themes ever made. Fantastic stuff from Harold Faltermeyer, and despite the nasty frog thing, I love this theme to death (the original one of course). If Harold can capture the energy of this into something for Cop Out that would be great. Jimmy M perhaps?

I love the theme to Cash, which is a perfect fit for the misfit of a cop. From the moment he arrives at his house with his car and the theme is playing, you know it’s a match made in heaven. Cop Out needs goofiness and Harold Faltermeyer certainly can provide that comic match for Tracy Morgan or Seann William Scott’s character.

10. Kevin Smith

Thank you Kevin Smith for bringing on Harold Faltermeyer to your project. I have a feeling Kevin Smith and Harold Faltermeyer will be a match made in Hollywood heaven. Kevin has said that he used temp tracks from Harold Faltermeyer’s great catalogue of film music to accompany the movie and then he got Harold F. himself to sign up to do the score. Kevin also said he wanted some old school Harold which makes it even better. Kevin Smith, I think I love you…

11. Tango & Cash

The movie itself has to be a model for all great buddy cop action movies and it’s certainly one of Harold’s best collaborations to date. From the funny Cash theme to the awesome powersynth Tango anthem, it doesn’t get much better than this!

12. Beverly Hills Cop

Another reason why he should rule in 2010 with the release of Cop Out. Both Tango & Cash and Beverly Hills Cop has exactly what Cop Out need. Lots of action, lots and lots of humor and most of all incredible chemistry between the characters and the music itself.

If Cop Out should need some more softer tones, perhaps some romance then Harold is the man. He can do it all which the love theme from Tango & Cash proves. This is a wonderful touchy song that is just calming and great to listen to.

An extremely funny and great theme written for Eddie Murphy and I can see him when I listen to this wonderful cue. Great synth stuff from Harold yet again.

15. Cop Out

This is of course the greatest reason why Harold Faltermeyer will rule in 2010. Kevin Smith’s new movie starring Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. I am probably the only one who loved the trailer and it looks great. It looks funny as hell and you know there will some awesome action scenes as well. It has Kevin Smith and Bruce Willis! I pray that this movie will be a success and etched into people’s mind in a good way. I hope people will remember this score and most of all that it gets an official release. Can you imagine? An official Harold Faltermeyer score released in 2010? Yes, YES, YES!!

You are watching a movie. At home, at the cinema. The music of the movie has a pulling power, it gets your attention. You are still thinking about the music when the credits have rolled. You got to get that cd. It’s just that good. You decide to get that cd or preview it online and then it happens. Disappointment…

You listen to this cd and it just doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t have the impact as it did when you were watching the movie. It’s disappointing because you always like a new and good sounding score. A score that hits the mark. It leaves you puzzled why it disappoints. But why? Why does the musical score as a standalone miss the mark.

I recently got this feeling while I was watching The Escapist. A fun little movie I saw. I loved the sound from the beginning. It had the pulling power. So when I was home I went on the internet. I tried to find the score. I found it somewhere and previewed it. Somehow the magic was gone. The theme was there and was nice but nothing more.

This is not the first time I have had this experience. I’m sure some of you had this as well. There is just some added value to the music when it plays with the film. The impact is bigger. The excitement is higher.

Brian Tyler said it once “I’m the unseen emotion of the film”. The music and the images are all impulses on our brain. The mix of those two have an impact which works or which doesn’t work. Sometimes it works better to have no music during a certain scene. Which is better? It depends on alot of things and everyone has their opinion about that.

My question to you: What score did you like when you first saw it on film but when you heard it standalone it was just disappointing? What scores do you like as a standalone too?

Like last year, I have been checking up on my colleagues around the world wide web in an attempt to discover what everyone loved and hated. In this research I have been through all the reviews of 26 websites and rounded up the ratings of no less than 128 film and TV scores. There has been (to my knowledge) 571 reviews written and the average score of all reviews is 68 out of 100. How does that compare from 2008? It’s pretty much the same with an average rating of 66. Maybe 2009 was a better year for scores?

We are now gearing up for Christmas and New Year. Times of joy and reflection. You always look back at the year and talk about the things that happened and the things that didn’t happen. The time of year where every day you hear Last Christmas by Wham or All I want for christmas by Mariah Carey on the radio. The last one is playing as I write this article.

Everyone has rituals during the Christmas and New Year period. You go to friends, family or rather be alone at home watching tv where every tv station has their New Year show. I always go to my family. The one time in a whole year that we are all together. But that’s not all. One of the things I keep doing is listening to some of my most favorite scores and tracks.In the week of Christmas to New Year I try to listen to as many scores I really like and just be happy. Just that one time of year. What scores will I play? Of course The Rock but others are Gladiator by Hans Zimmer, Terminator 1 & 2 by Brad Fiedel, 1492: Conquest of paradise by Vangelis and Pirates of the Carribean by Klaus Badelt just to name a few.

I can go on and on about this long list of scores I like and which I love but if I do that this article would be 4 pages long. The point is that I’m putting the ear pieces in and listen to the tunes I love while I look outside and see the white trees and the snow is falling.

We hope that all the best things may happen for you and that you achieve more goals in life. We also hope that 2010 will bring alot of new scores, Scores we can discuss about and discover new material. Material that sounds good to our ears.

We all rate music scores differently. Some are good, Some are bad and some are in a  special category. What do you mean a special category? I think everyone of us has a  category of tracks that just give you goosebumps. Tracks that have such an impact  on an individual for different reasons. Tracks you can listen to over and over again  without ever getting bored by it.

What is it? What makes this track so special that you just sit down and listen or get inspired  by listening by just this one track. Is it the instruments or the pace or something else.  It can  go deeper than just what we see and what we hear.

Tracks can be special to us because we listened to them through some of the best and worst  times of our lives. Because you listened to them on one of those defining moments in your  life and every one has these moments, the moments that define your life.

Is this all? No. You can have tons of reasons why that particular track gives you  goosebumps. Every one is unique. Every person has their own characteristiscs and their own  life style. Their own norms and values. Their own way of listening to music and their own  story.

If you would ask me which track inspires me or give me goosebumps it would be Rockets Away from the soundtrack of The Rock. Everytime I see that move and hear that tune it  sends me chills down my spine. I can’t explain it why but when I first saw the movie I was 10  years old. I already liked it then and I still like it now. It’s just perfect. The action, The tension.  One of the tracks that gives me goosebumps.

Christmas is by far my most favorite holiday. It’s the one time where my family keep a strong tradition and makes it an evening not to forget. It’s also a time for celebration, a time for films and music. Every year I have certain rituals where I’ll watch my favorite Christmas movies, and of course it’s the one time of year that I don’t have to feel guilty for listening to Christmas music.

I have my favorites and I’m sure you have yours also. The list I compiled means something to me, more than just the fusion of film and music, they are nostalgic and have a very strong sense of emotional attachment. 15. All I Want For Christmas by Bruce Broughton

Not a classic, but a cute little Christmas story and Bruce Broughton was brought in to give it that extra special Christmas sound. I like the warmth of this very short score (only about 16 minutes). Bruce Broughton’s other Christmas score Miracle On 34th Street is perhaps more famous and let’s not forget Eloise at Christmastime, but I always liked this one better.

14. The Holiday by Hans Zimmer

I love romantic comedies, it’s true. A hopeless romantic, but it has given me many hours of (some would say pointless) entertainment. The Holiday is a great couch-watch if you are in the romantic mood this Christmas. It also shows that Hans Zimmer is not all Mr. Macho Action guy, but also a bit of a soft, cute, cuddly  kitten. Okay, weird mental image, but joking aside, this is a really nice romantic comedy score with all the trimmings. Enjoy!

13. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by Harry Gregson-Williams

Not technically a movie about Christmas — actually not at all — but who said it would be? It’s all about memories and I remember, this one came out just before Christmas and I watched and enjoyed it so much. The excellent score by Harry Gregson-Williams was slightly magical as well.

12. The Nightmare Before Christmas by Danny Elfman

Yes, why #12 you ask? Shouldn’t this be #1? Well, yes and no. As a movie it clearly is a Christmas classic and as an accompanying soundtrack. However I am judging it by the score away from the songs, and without the funny voices it doesn’t have the same charm to it. Still a wonderful tie-in with the movie and that’s why it’s up here at nr. 12.

11. Jingle All The Way by David Newman

A very fun movie that never ceases to wake up the kid in me. Yeah I know it’s childish, but the energy of it is great and David Newman managed to capture that in the score. It just needs a little bit of polishing to make it ascend in rank. All in all an entertaining Christmas score.

10. Santa Claus The Movie by Henry Mancini

I just have a soft spot for these old Christmas comedies. This one is technically a fantasy, but pure fun nonetheless. The score has a mystical but Christmassy feel to it. Just a wonderful trip back in time that still holds up well in 2009. Just don’t expect an all-out Christmas score when you get it.

09. Love Actually by Craig Armstrong

I know what you’re thinking. Yet another romantic comedy. Even though I watched it at Christmas, the movie is not near as good as Craig Armstrong’s excellent score. Pure Christmas candy this, but it goes well for all seasons. The theme might be a bit pompous and overachieving, but hey it’s Christmas right?

08. Blizzard by Mark McKenzie

Who knew that this movie no one really remembers has such a great energetic score? It does and from the first cue it just scoops you up on a wonderful journey. It’s very uplifting so you Tim Burton fans better be careful with this one. I love inspirational scores like this.

07. Jack Frost by Trevor Rabin

Another great thematic score by Trevor Rabin. This is what he does when he is at his best. He just writes one hit after another and this extremely short score has it, and leaves you wanting more. A fun movie to boot and you will get in that Christmas mood in no time.

06. A Dog Named Christmas by Jeff Beal

Fresh out of the stores, this came out of nowhere and totally surprised me. I have been a Jeff Beal lurker for a while, sitting on the fence, but this score finally sold me. What an uplifting inspirational family-friendly score! This has the potential of being a Christmas classic, but ask me in 5 years or so if it’s still up there.

05. Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas) by Philippe Rombi

French Christmas doesn’t come better than this (Even if it’s not… well… see the movie). In fact, it’s pretty hard to beat by any country. Philippe Rombi has constructed a Christmas classic that will touch you with it’s minimalistic beauty.

04. The Polar Express by Alan Silvestri

He does know how to make a classic doesn’t he? Recently he tried with A Christmas Carol and didn’t quite make it, but go back 5 years and you have The Polar Express which is delightful from start to finish. In fact, watch this movie today and be mesmerized by Silvestri’s wonderful lush orchestral score.

Five New Yorkers come together on Christmas Eve, seeking a miracle, or so the synopsis say. Well I say they found a Christmas miracle in this wonderful score. It’s so full of heart and great themes, that just listening to this will give you goosebumps.

02. Edward Scissorhands by Danny Elfman

The original gothic Christmas, the way only Johnny Depp, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman could do it. It doesn’t get much better than this. Wonderful movie, wonderful story, wonderful acting, wonderful directing and wonderful music by Danny Elfman. The soft instruments, windy choirs (which are by far the centerpiece of the score), the magical melodies, take your pick! No Christmas without Edward Scissorhands!

01. Home Alone by John Williams

Oh John, how do you come up with the goods over and over? Hands down one of the best Christmas comedies ever, just pure fun and required watching at Christmas. Then comes the enthralling sound of John Williams on top of it all. The main theme itself is just the beginning, but you recognize the tones everywhere. They say Christmas lasts until easter, but I have been heard humming this in June, just saying. This is THE Christmas classic folks, so make sure you have a wonderful John Williams Christmas!

Movie Soundtrack Previews are always fun, and perhaps particularly this one. Who else was surprised when they heard that Hans Zimmer was composing for Sherlock Holmes?

I was expecting someone else to be honest, but before we shoot him, let hear what Zimmer has come up with.

Hans Zimmer is rarely alone in these Remote Control Productions scores, usually accompanied by Lorne Balfe who wrote most of the cues in Zimmer’s last score Modern Warfare 2.

The preview is of the first cue on the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack and I’m curious to know what you all think. Personally I think he has taken some inspiration from Pirates of the Caribbean, particularly Jack Sparrow and it sounds very interesting.
