A new year is upon us and it’s time to reflect on 2007, and this has been a very good year of movie scores. I’ve listened to about 80 movie scores released this year and in fairness, the list should have been longer, but 10 is such a nice number, so let’s get on with it shall we?
10. Michael Clayton by James Newton Howard

A quiet score, but a great one. It has all the elements of mystery and just listening to the score makes you want to go see the movie.
09. The Number 23 by Harry Gregson-Williams

A mysterious score to a mysterious movie and what a score it is. It is certainly better than the movie deserves. Don’t get me wrong, this movie was very watchable indeed, but the score has big box office hit written all over it and what’s with the crazy horn? Absolutely brilliant stuff from Harry Gregson-Williams.
08. Elizabeth: The Golden Age by Craig Armstrong and A.R. Rahman

This one should have been a surprise, but wasn’t because Craig Armstrong and A.R. Rahman has proven themselves to be among the heavy hitters of scoring. I’m looking forward to hear what they come up with next.
07. War by Brian Tyler

A high quality score from Brian Tyler. It’s powerful and pulsating. I think Mr. Tyler is on my list every year. He does a lot of scores, some bad, some good and some great. This one falls into the great category and it’s looking very good for next year.
06. Hitman by Geoff Zanelli

This was a pleasant surprise to me. I haven’t heard much of Geoff Zanelli’s music before except Disturbia which was slightly above average. This was something else, and this is a score that will be Zanelli’s baseline for me, meaning he’s in trouble.
05. Rendition by Paul Hepker & Mark Kilian

This score makes me think of the collaboration between Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard for the Gladiator score. It is a beautiful piece of work.
04. Premonition by Klaus Badelt

Another great score by Klaus Badelt. He is fast becoming one of my favourite composers in Hollywood, and Premonition is another winner on his belt. It has suspense and romance all beautifully put together.
03. Sunshine by John Murphy

A beautiful ambient score. It captures the movie perfectly and in a blend of grace and beauty. John Murphy has created an amazing score.
02. Transformers by Steve Jablonsky

Not only a great movie, but a spectacular score to go with it. It was perhaps so full of action that the score couldn’t be clearly visible to the ear, but this is truly special. It’s epic, and the sounds Steve Jablonsky uses is just chilling. Top class score!
01. National Treasure: Book of Secrets by Trevor Rabin

I was ready to go with Transformers as my nr.1 when this one hit me. Trevor Rabin does it again. Not only does this score sound great and powerful, but it has feeling. You can really feel the care and love of Mr. Rabin as he made this. A true masterpiece and the nr. 1 score for 2007.

I can agree that Transformers had a great score, I never saw National Book 2, infact, I have heard almost none of these scores, time to catch up? I think so.
Nick Plowman’s last blog post..ACE Eddies - Winners
Glad to hear you say so. I think a lot of people don’t see outside of the award winning scores, but there are so much good stuff out there to be listened to.
It certainly is an underrated score. People don’t talk much about the Robert Rodriguez scores which is a shame.

[...] Game, War and Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem. As you know I really enjoyed War as it made it to my top 10 this year. Finishing The Game was good as well, while AVPR was strictly average. All in all a good [...]
