My name is Jørn Tillnes and I am the owner of this blog. I am Norwegian, recently lived in the UK, but now I’m back in Norway.
HOW I BECAME A SOUNDTRACK GEEK
The fall of 1992 was when it happened, the summer I became… a soundtrack geek. I was 15 and while my fellow classmates fell in love with their well… fellow classmates, I fell in love with the sound of Vangelis and 1492. 500 years earlier, Columbus discovered America, I discovered the music 500 years later. No doubt if Columbus were alive today, he would stay in his Italian apartment listening to soundtracks all day.
From that year, my life changed. I might not have discovered America, but I discovered something even more beautiful. I discovered Vangelis, John Williams, Basil Poledouris, Mark Isham, Brad Fiedel, Alan Silvestri and many others which filled my afternoons and evenings with audible pleasure. Of course, I listened to a lot of other music too, some of it really bad. I don’t want to go into the terrible 1994 dance phase, so don’t ask, still trying to suppress it.
There were a few years I didn’t listen to many soundtracks and my interest seems to fade, but it came back with a vengeance a few years ago. You see I started writing movie scripts and I have problems concentrating so I needed something to get the momentum going. I thought: “Hey, I am writing movie scripts, I need movie music!”. So I went out and bought music that I thought would go great with what I am writing, which was mostly sci-fi. Blade Runner was of course perfect and got my imagination going. I then went on to writing short stories and expanded my soundtrack library further. Then in the fall of 2006, I decided to write a novel, so I needed an aggressive expansion and I fell in love all over again with the beautiful and varied movie scores out there.
WHY DID I START THIS BLOG?
It’s funny, I can’t remember the exact reason why I decided to start this blog, but I have two passions: writing and soundtracks, so why not combine them? I also had been challenging myself to write articles and reviews after writing a personal blog and fiction for so long. I also felt that there weren’t many of these sites around, especially blogs, that talked about movie music. So I made a decision in December last year to start Soundtrackgeek and I am happy to say that I am still having fun discovering new music and re-discovering the classics.
VISION FOR THE FUTURE
I want peace on earth etc. but I also have a vision for this blog. In fact I think of this blog of more than just a blog. I know it’s not a website, but I want it to be, but have the features and benefits of a blog. I also want to create a community for soundtrack fans to come together and discuss the music, the composers, the business and everything else soundtracks. I hope you all like what I have so far and what will be coming in the near future.
I am pleased that Soundtrackgeek is growing and we got another reviewer on this site. His name is Jon Blough and here’s a quick intro:
Jon Blough
Jon Blough has been a devoted film-score disciple for over seven years. His favorite score is The Lord of the Rings…no, not the Rosenman-composed one. His favorite composers, based on total quality output, are David Arnold, Michael Giacchino, James Horner, John Williams, and Tangerine Dream. He has a strong feeling you will mispronounce his last name (it rhymes with plow). He hails from Michigan and, if not for the Sarah Palin nomination, would probably be the only person you’d know who was born in the great state of Alaska (Daddy was a Coast Guard man). He currently is a sophomore at Northwestern University, majoring in political science and international relations and minoring in Chinese while trying to fit collegiate policy debate, distance running, and a mad obsession with pro sports (go Steelers!) in there somewhere. He is also kidding about Tangerine Dream being a quality film composing group.
Timothy E. Raw
Timothy E. RAW is a film score enthusiast with almost 600 scores in his collection. The first ever score he owned was Hans Zimmer’s Broken Arrow, a Christmas present that year, though he suspects he first caught the bug hearing John Du Prez’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! These days his tastes though still wide-ranging, lean more towards lesser-known independent fair. Two of his favourite score albums so far this year are, Adrift In Manhattan by Michael A. Levine and Joshua by Nico Muhly. His most beloved score is Jon Brion’s Magnolia and his favourite composers are Mychael Danna and Carter Burwell.
William Bard
A young amateur composer and passionate film score lover from the United States (as well as big-time Star Wars junkie), I have been a film score fan ever since the release of John Williams’Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and have amassed a growing collection since then. (Current) favorite scores include Eragon, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Hook, the Indiana Jonesscores, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, The Phantom of the Opera (not really a score, but I had to throw it in there), the Pirates of the Caribbean scores, the Star Wars scores (video games and television included), and the more recent WALL-E. In my free time, I enjoy listening to film scores (as expected) and ‘classical’ music (as it is so called), watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars, posting on various film music message boards.
Hannibal
A funk loving cat owner who will buy entire DVD series box sets just because he likes the show’s soundtrack.
