Well this is interesting don’t you think? If it1s true that is. It isn’t quite official yet, but Scott Bettencourt of FSM broke the news today. Here’s what he had to say:
“(Alexandre Desplat) …has signed for one his most challenging and highest-profile assignments yet, the penultimate entry in the Harry Potter saga.”
He says in the FSM forum that his source is reliable, but we’ll have to wait for further confirmation. If true, then honestly, who saw this coming? Actually in retrospect it’s weird no one mentioned him at all.
Perhaps it is a disappointment for some that John Williams won’t come back, but I suspected this since he is probably too busy with other projects. Besides, Tintin was just officially put to John Williams name.
Now I think this is pretty cool actually, especially since he did such a wonderful job on The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The question remains however, since he pretty much ignored everything Carter Burwell did in the first Twilight movie, will he ignore John Williams legendary themes from Harry Potter? What would you all think about that?
Right now, I’m still trying to process the news and waiting for confirmation. Harry Potter without Williams themes? Hmm…
What do you all think about this development? Let me know in the comments section below.

To be honest, I’m very very surprised. Desplat wouldn’t be my first choice, but I hope that he keeps the themes from previous films. From what I’ve heard from him, his action cues aren’t that amazing, although he writes great soft mellow cues, and because this movie’s going to be full of action, it’s going to be interesting to see how he writes these.

Yeah I hope he does retain the themes. Wouldn’t be the same without them. The themes are up there with Superman and Star Wars in my opinion and you can’t make a new Star Wars or Superman movie without the themes…

Hummm, I’m a great fan of the saga, and I started hating the film since Williams disapeared. However I allways give the benefict of doubt to the new composers (I hope he didnt’ get so much inflooded by the current director).

It will be interesting to see what he comes up with. I simply loved New Moon. He certainly surprised me in a big way with a very energetic score. If he can have the same energy for Harry Potter, then we have something to look forward to. Hope he doesn’t take on as many projects like last year, 9 was it?

I’m sorry you want the same energy of that crappy twilight movie for Harry Potter? What?

Let’s not confuse the ‘crappy’ Twilight movie with the score shall we? Even bad movies can have a great score, which I think New Moon by Desplat was. Usually I find Desplat lifeless and boring, but there was something completely different for New Moon, an energy I haven’t heard from the composer before. All I meant was that if he can get back to that level of commitment for HP, I think we are all in for a surprise.
Here we go again. James Horner dropped the big theme in his Star Trek II, it became one of the best. Patrick Doyle dropped all John Williams themes for Harry Potter, it became suprisingly my favorite Harry Potter score. So I don’t care if he uses the John Williams themes or other, as long as he writes a good score. If they wanted a mixture of old and some new they should have hired John Otman because of his work for Superman.

…or Brian Tyler who is always very respectful.
Yes, I just about fell out of my chair when I found out Alexandre Desplat was doing the Deathly Hallows…but ya know – he did a great job for the Golden Compass and Twilight Saga’s: New Moon, so I think he will live up to his potential and do a superb job!!
Much luck and good wishes to Mr. Desplat ![]()

I also think he will do a great job. Let’s hope our faith in him is rewarded!
I think he’s a great composer and I loved what he did with Benjamin Button, BUT I don’t think he’s right for Harry Potter. He hasn’t really done a film on this scale before. Part one of DH is going to be action-packed from start to finish so they need someone who can handle that. I just don’t know if he can do it, but if it’s true then I guess I will have to wait and see. I really want John Williams to return for Part two since he’s not doing part one.
I just wish they would’ve went for someone like Hans Zimmer or Michael Gacchino.

Let’s give him a chance before we judge him shall we? I am also very curious to how he will handle the action as that isn’t really his forte, but he totally surprised me with New Moon. Haven’t been a fan of the composer before that score. I think I saw the light and wonder if he can surprise me yet again with HP (I sure hope so).
Williams may yet do Part 2 as only Part 1 is confirmed by Desplat’s agents. As for Zimmer and Giacchino… hmm no
