I didn’t listen to every score that was released this year although I heard a lot of them. So if I should give awards for 2009 I would give the following awards:
- Best blockbuster score: James Horner – Avatar
- Best drama score: Elioth Goldental – Public Enemies
- Best documentary score: Armand Amar – Home
- Best game score: Joris De Man – Killzone 2
- Best movie theme: Alexandre Desplat – New Moon Theme
- Best game theme: Hans Zimmer – Opening & End Credits Call Of Duty MW2
- Best newcomer score: Clinton Shorter – District 9
- Biggest (and I mean VERY big) disappointment: Steve Jablonsky – Transformers 2

We do have similar taste, but why the hate for the excellent Transformers 2? Clearly one of the best score this year. Other great scores include Terminator Salvation, Star Trek, District 9, The Tudors Season 2, Avatar, The Lazarus Project, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Ink, Goemon, Prototype, Outlander, Mirror’s Edge, Moon, Heroes, Star Crossed, Home, Public Enemies, Red Cliff 2, A Dog Named Christmas, 9, Angels & Demons, Agora.
Those are in the top class if you ask me.

I like almost all the same scores you do except a few such as Taking Of Pelham cause I’m not into these elektronic kind of scores.
As for Transformers 2. The music was not bad but fairly unoriginal. Also too less themes from the first one where omitted from the CD. I had loads of listening fun with the expanded version from the first movie but the second one was severly lacking. Another soundtrack that can be added to this list is Sherlock Holmes. Great soundtrack. It’s on the warnerbros site for streaming and I like it.

It’s true, Transformers 2 was unoriginal, but what did you expect? I don’t think anyone was expecting something fresh and original. I love Transformers 2 because it is such an amazing tour de force of bombastic sounds that very few can produce. The music is not a memorable fare, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s in-the-moment music and it is pretty spectacular still.
Sherlock Holmes is very peculiar. Some of it is very bad, some is decent, some is good. The 18 minute cue is wonderful though. One of Zimmer’s best.

Jorn, if you like pure bombast check out Two Steps From Hell trailer music. Even more bombastic then transformers although it lacks thematic stuff since it’s not a soundtrack.

I thought the Transformers 2 score was great (although I did like the first one better)!
I also think the best movie themes this year were composed by Michael Giacchino. Both Star Trek and Up had great and memorable themes IMO. So I’m very happy that MG got a nomination for his Up score, and I’m hoping for an Oscar nomination as well.

I wish Star Trek got some nominations. A wonderful score with the daunting task of pleasing Trekkies and everyone else. Giacchino pulled it off in style.
Hello all,
I saw the movie and also have the avatar soundtrack. I have to say both are outstanding. However, the flute that is played in some scenes in the movie seems to be a little lower then what is found on the soundtrack. I know this sounds a little strange but check out the youtube video here “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXF-VZVdR2Y” and compare it with the songs on the official album. I was able to narrow it down to “Jake’s First Flight” and “Becoming One Of ”The People” Becoming One With Neytiri”

Hmm interesting. Maybe they did something in the studio that changed it. I’ll have to investigate this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Also review the music that plays on the avatarmovie.com site. I believe some of this music is not on the official album either.

There’s tons of material not present on the official album. Hope they release a “More Music From Avatar”.

I’ve only heard Up and Avatar, but both are worthy of a Golden Globe in my book.

Agree. I have a feeling Up will be the big winner in the award shows next year, but who knows?
