Varese Sarabande recently opened up for the possibility of limited releases of soundracks that otherwise would not be released on CD. Here’s the official word:
In an age when more and more releases are being made available as “download only,” we are going to try and stay a little old-fashioned by standing by the good old CD. While our regular releases have now long been made available both on CD and as downloads, we have released just a few iTunes-only titles. Soundtracks for films with more limited distribution have a hard time finding an audience in cities where the film itself is not shown. Since more and more of our favorite composers are scoring films that fall into this category, we thought it was time to start a new series of releases that is kind of a hybrid between our regular releases and our CD Club. These titles will be made available digitally at iTunes and Amazon, but we will also produce a limited number of CDs to be sold from our own web site. Hopefully this will provide the best option for fans of the composers and allow scores that might otherwise have fallen by the wayside to be added to the collection of those who want them, in the format that suits them best. We anticipate this to be a sporadic series, not a prolific one.
The first 2 releases are ready. It’s The Stoning of Soraya M. by John Debney and In The Electric Mist by Marco Beltrami.
It’s very exciting indeed! Here’s a couple of links (with previews):

i like this idea. i’m kinda leery of buying CDs, not because i’m a newly-born digital media snob, but simply because i’m out of space to rack my CDs (i have close to 3000.) given a choice, i usually go for a download from amazon now.
getting some of the LE stuff that VS or la la land does as a digital download will be wonderful.

Soundtrack Seek
Ever read a blog post that makes you happy and angry at the same time. I appreciate this post because it reminds me that Varese Sarabande has some great hard to get soundtracks.
This recent news of digital downloads seems to be very progressive and a little overdue. I love getting stuff in the mail but I also don’t mind losing the cost of shipping and getting instant gratification.
Now for the part that pisses me off. You go view their soundtrack club and it almost seems like a badge of honor that they have so many soundtracks that are sold out. For instance: Commando, Predator, and Die Hard just to name a few. These have been sold out since last year. I know because I got some myself before they sold out. It is easy to understand a CD being out of print but why aren’t these also made for digital distribution? It’s like an unseen faucet in the desert to me. It’s not like people will scoff at not being able to get the CD and say screw the download. Well maybe a few linear note enthusiasts but why torture people with “sold out” when you can just as easily quench their thirst with a digital version.
