It’s soon time to head to the cinema and watch a huge comeback. I’ve been a fan of Star Trek ever since I got a satellite and found Star Trek The Next Generation on Sky One. It had everything I needed in a sci-fi show and more. I watched and enjoyed the world of Gene Roddenberry immensely. The storylines were slightly simplistic in the first couple of seasons, but I loved the plots no matter what and the character developments were great. Remember Worf in the first season? He was a grunting cardboard figure, but look at him now! When Tasha Yar got swallowed up and killed by that oil entity I was shocked. How can a popular TV show kill off one of its main characters!?
A Star Trek fan was born, and what grasped me every time was the fascinating opening theme. The music on television I thought to myself. That is to be debated of course, but it was bold, great and everything a TV theme should be. I grew to love the music of Star Trek, it has its own style and life on its own. There’s been many Star Trek composers, most notably Jerry Goldsmith who did the music for Star Trek The Motion Picture, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek Insurrection and Star Trek Nemesis.
Other composers are Alexander Courage, Fred Steiner, Sol Kaplan, Gerald Fried, Cliff Eidelman, James Horner, Dennis McCarthy, Leonard Rosenman, Jay Chattaway, Don Davis, John Debney, Ron Jones, John Frizzell, Mark McKenzie and Brian Tyler to name a few.
Star Trek is due for a reboot. Despite the great music, the show hasn’t been quite the same since TNG (although I still hold DS9 as my favorite). With J.J. Abrams at the helm and Michael Giacchino in the composer chair, Star Trek takes a new step into its proud history, to boldly go where no movie has gone before.
We at Soundtrackgeek are counting down to May 8th or perhaps more importantly for film score fans, May 5th when the Star Trek score by Michael Giacchino will hit us. Jon Blough has been hard at work recently and I mean really hard at work. He is like me a fan of Star Trek and has a lot to say about the various TV shows and movies. He has been listening and writing reviews like a true Star Fleet captain and coming up in the next couple of weeks will be review of all the movies and TV Show music from The Original Series as well as The Next Generation and who knows what else!?
So enjoy all film score and Star Trek fans to what will be some glorious weeks ahead.
Here’s a couple of great videos about the music of Star Trek featuring the legendary Jerry Goldsmith:

One of your best written pieces Jorn, well put! I’ve always respected Star Trek but never liked it, but you managed to get even me excited over a series and composer I’m not a fan of!
I wish the technology had been backdated to match that of the original series.

Goldsmith didn’t do ST 6. That was Eidelman, whom you referenced in the next paragraph.
