Here are my picks for best action film score release of 2008.

5. Max Payne (Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders)

It’s dark and moody, just the way I like it! Marco Beltrami’s best score in a while and with the help of Buck Sanders, enters my top 5. Dark, Gritty and a lot of Payne.

4. Death Race (Paul Haslinger)

A hard-hitting action score by Paul Haslinger which has a lot of death and race in it.

3. Bangkok Dangerous (Brian Tyler)

An action score with feelings and a great one at that. It just about beats Eagle Eye which was also great, but I just enjoy the mix between great action and reflective cues.

2. The Dark Knight (Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard)

What!? Not nr. 1? I know I know. Let’s just say that is one of the best scores this year and deservedly so. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard created a masterpiece with this one. It took the good stuff from Batman Begins and added more good stuff.

1. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Randy Edelman)

Surprised? I am not. The movie wasn’t great, but the score is one of the best I have heard in a while. Adventurous, fun, emotional and action-filled is just few of the words I would use to describe the score to The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

‘Wanted’ didn’t make it on the list? Preposterous! ;-)

I totally agree with you. The mummy was one of the big surprises last year. The score has great themes.

Thanks for saying so. I was surprised myself, but happy that it was so great.
