Soundtrack Review: Sex And The City (2008)
This is a review of the motion picture soundtrack for Sex And The City.
“The style of music and the lyrics you can find on this soundtrack really is what Sex and the City is all about”
There’s been a lot of buzz about this movie understandably, and if you are a fan of the TV series, then you probably knew it was going to be a soundtrack accompanying the movie. There’s no score planned for release, so we have to make due with this soundtrack with songs from various artists. I’m a big fan of soundtracks that captured the soul of the movie, like Once or Into The Wild, then there are soundtracks like Heroes, which totally missed the mark. This is the track list of Sex and the City:
Track List
- Labels Or Love (by Fergie)
- All Dressed In Love (by Jennifer Hudson)
- The Look Of Love (Madison Park Vs. Lenny B Remix) (by Nina Simone)
- New York Girls (by Morningwood)
- All This Beauty (by The Weepies)
- I Like The Way (by Kaskade)
- It’s Amazing (by Jem)
- How Deep Is Your Love (by The Bird & The Bee)
- The Heart Of The Matter (by India.Arie)
- Auld Lang Syne (by Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis)
- Kissing (by Bliss)
- How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (by Al Green & Joss Stone)
- Walk This Way (by Run D.M.C & Aerosmith)
- Sex And The City Movie Theme (By The Pfeifer Broz. Orchestra)
The Planet Of The Females
Just by looking at the track list, you can pretty much guess that love is a big theme here and it should be since it was a big theme in the TV series. There are 14 tracks and the total play time is 55:16. Another thing that’s interesting is that only 4 out of 14 are male artists, but again not so surprising. This is all about the girls, sex and the city. The songs that were used in the trailer is not on here, which is a shame. There’s still room on the CD. By the way, the songs were Fever by Peggy Lee and Blue Skies by Ella Fitzgerald. I mentioned the score in my intro and interestingly, the score is composed by Bob Christianson, Douglas J. Cuomo, Didier Rachou and Kenneth Burgomaster in the TV Series. In the big screen version however, Aaron Zigman got the job. I like Aaron Zigman and I want to hear the music he made for this movie, hope there is a bootleg or something out there.
Fitting And Fun
I am happy to say that this is a well produced soundtrack which “gets” this movie. The style of music and the lyrics you can find on this soundtrack really is what Sex and the City is all about. The main theme by Fergie says it all really, love or labels, it’s a choice I’m sure the girls have to take. It is a very catchy song which I didn’t particularly like when I first listened to it, but it’s growing on me now. There are so many good songs here and my favourites have to be All This Beauty by The Weepies, I Like The Way by Kaskade, Kissing by Bliss and of course the classic Walk This Way by Run D.M.C and Aerosmith. I wonder what scene that will play in and I wonder if the track list is in chronological order of the movie? If so, does it means it ends bad? Broken heart? Of course Walk This Way could be a cool and happy ending, we’ll have to see this weekend. I like this soundtrack, and I have a feeling that it will be better than the movie. Listen to Sex and the City below:
Negatives:
- No instrumental tracks by Aaron Zigman
Positives:
- It is perfect for this movie
- Varied and entertaining songs
