Soundtrack Review: Once by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (2007)

This is a review of the original soundtrack to the motion picture Once by Glenn Hansard and Marketa Irglova.
When I saw this movie, I remember how much I missed Dublin. I used to live there for 2 years, and there were street musicians like Glen Hansard playing for fun and money. I never really notice them, but I guess I will now after seeing this movie. Glen Hansard is a musician, always has been. He is the vocalist/guitarist for the Irish rock group “The Frames”. He made an album with Marketa Irglova in 2006 called “The Swell Season” which is now a bestseller of course. He also played a part in the movie “The Commitments”. Marketa Irglova is a musician who started very early playing the piano. Here is the track list for Once:
- Falling Slowly
- If You Want Me
- Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy
- When Your Minds Made Up
- Lies
- Gold
- The Hill
- Fallen From The Sky
- Leave
- Trying To Pull Myself Away
- All The Way Down
- Once
- Say It To Me Now
13 tracks and a total playtime of 43:42. You have three kinds of soundtracks, the ones that sound great in movies, but sound bad when played on the stereo. Then you have the ones that sound great on the stereo, but doesn’t work in the movies (rare). Lastly you have the ones that sound great both in the movie and on the stereo. This one fits nicely in the last category, with songs that are wonderful to listen to. I found myself singing while listening to the songs. That’s one thing I love about these songs, they are so easy to sing to or hum to.
Aah, the songs, they are kind of folky in a way. A man and his guitar and the woman with the piano of course. “Falling Slowly” won an Academy Award for Best Song this year and well deserved I would say. I love the scene in the movie where they play together for the first time and they play this song. It’s such a beautiful song and I love singing it and humming it. This soundtrack is filled with heart warming songs like that, just give it a listen, winter or summer, day or night, it will still be great. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova have gotten a new fan in me, and I have to check out their other work. Listen to Once below:

I am still humming to the songs. “Falling Slowly” was my favorite when I wrote this review, but I have to say I love the powerful singing in the last track “Say It To Me Now”. A brilliant soundtrack.
I think the scene where they record When Your Mind’s Made Up is my favorite, so I of course love that song on the CD. Just caught Hansard and Irglova last night in Portland and they were fantastic. Posted a review at http://isorski.blogspot.com/ - check it out.
