Soundtrack Review: A Perfect Place by Mike Patton (2008)
This is a review of the motion picture score for A Perfect Place by Mike Patton.
This is not a big release, in fact it is a short film by Derrick Scocchera but I thought I would give it a review because I am curious about Mike Patton. I’m not too familiar with his composing work. Did you know that Mike Patton is the former singer for the band Faith no More? Me neither, but great songs like “Epic” and “Easy” comes to mind. Here is the track list for A Perfect Place:

15 tracks and a total playtime of 35:29. The movie itself is only 25 minutes by the way. The only way to describe this movie score are the words weird and different. It’s been a long time since I heard something this experimental. It goes from jazz to experimental rock and everything in between. It can be very uncomfortable to listen to, but you can’t stop listening to it. The thing that puzzles me is how he went from hard rockin’ singer dude to this?
I’m listening to this song called “Catholic Tribe” which starts out like a song from the jungle and then Mike Patton mixes it with church organs. It’s unheard of, and certainly original. Most people will probably never know about this album, but they will be missing out. I am confused about what to give this score. On a personal level, I would not have this on my mp3 player, but on the other hand, it’s fascinating, fresh and original. Listen to A Perfect Place by Mike Patton below:

Thanks for the insight Garg. I would say he is just experimenting, having fun on A Perfect Place. I haven’t heard anything from him outside of FNM, so I wouldn’t know of his “weirdness”, but it makes perfect sense.
I’ve always been a fan of Mike since he joined FNM and have continued being a fan through to now.
When I think I have everything he has done, there is always something still out there.
He is a workaholic, but then again if work was enjoyful and easy as making music, I would be a workaholic too.

Oh, THAT Mike Patton? He’s always been weird. Faith No More mixed quite a few genres, but I thought they did it quite well. There’s always been a jazz influence, especially in songs like ‘Star AD’ and ‘Evidence’ from ‘Fool for a day, king for a lifetime’ (by far their best album IMO). His solo stuff since then is more erratic and does not always have the same quality. I think he values creativitiy more than quality. Having Slayer’s drummer is always a plus though.
