Retro Wednesday: Kumite! Kumite! Kumite!

“free fighting” Kumite or “sparring” is when a two or more martial artists fight each other. Well ladies and gentlemen. Tonight is fight night! I loved these fight movies coming out in the 80s, and Jean Claude Van Damme was the king for me. 2 movies come to mind, Bloodsport and Kickboxer, and not only did they have the classic training montage and amazing fights, but the soundtracks had some amazing music by composer Paul Hertzog and 80s legend Stan Bush. I wonder what happened to Paul Hertzog. He scored for 6 movies from 1986 to 1991 then disappeared. Only Kickboxer and Bloodsport are released though. Once again I have been scouring Youtube for some great music montages including the trailers for Kickboxer and Bloodsport with the amazing score by Paul Hertzog playing in the background. Enjoy the 80s slugfest!

Let’s start off with the trailer to Kickboxer featuring the score by Paul Hertzog

Now this is what I am talking about. A crappy video featuring amazing music by Paul Hertzog for the movie Kickboxer

Watch the amazing Kickboxer training montage… aah I miss the 80s. Music by Paul Hertzog

Here’s a couple of songs from the Kickboxer soundtrack. First up is Stan Bush - Fight for Love and the second one is James Brown wannabe Beau Williams with Feeling so Good Today. The video is cool too as it is a Kickboxer/Bloodsport montage.

The Bloodsport trailer featuring the score by Paul Hertzog

Paul Hertzog and Shandi Cinnamon made this awesome song called Fight to Survive (Listen to the Kumite’s in there… I love it!). The video is a great fighting compilation from Bloodsport.

Paul Hertzog & Shandi Cinnamon keep going strong with On My Own.

I will end it all with a funny chase clip from Bloodsport to the song Steal The Night by Michael Bishop

Ahh…thanks for the trip down memory lane. Kickboxer’s alright, but it’s all about Bloodsport in my book. That trailer is FANtastic!

By the way, if you haven’t seen it, search out the Bloodsport/Mentos “ad.” It’s the highest of high comedy.

Kickboxer has the best score, but Bloodsport is the better movie.

Hehe I will check out the Bloodsport/Mentos ad. It sounds hilarious.

These movies were great, I remember watching them when I was younger. Then I saw one of them about a month ago and I was reminded how great they were again! Great Post!

The Bloodsport/Mentos ad is pretty funny.

I caught Bloodsport on TV a while back, it was okay for what it was, but to be fair, it is not the genre I usually enjoy, so it did alright.

Joe: I think I have worn out my DVD player with these gems, but I can’t help it. It’s just really amazing stuff with a truckload of nostalgia.

Nick: Haha yeah I saw it now and I also saw a Double Impact/Mentos ad. Yep, if you don’t like the genre, then it’s understandable that it didn’t go down so well. As for me, I think I need a weekend filled with those 80s fight movies :D

awesome post, awesome! i love all that good stuff.

oh and…unfortunately I liked Highwaymen…but sometimes i suspend belief.

Mr. Woodcock might have some atmosphere towards the third half, when all the jokes are suppose to be paying off…so it’s a “low” rental at most.

Hehe I’ll probably watch some really bad movies soon as part of my moviescore-project.

There should be a retrospective of inspirational fight songs from A and B list movies. I can see a list encompassing the Rocky series and Karate Kid (same director) as well as the movies featured here.

One of my favorite montages is actually from RockyIV where I thought they took it to a whole other level in both sound and concept.

There are others as well. Best of the Best and No Retreat No Surrender come to mind.

Rocky IV, the whole movie is one inspirational fight fest. The montages are superb! Love it when they pit man against machine.
