James Newton Howard has won the award of Outstanding Composer at the CUE Awards. I was surprised when I saw that, but I was happy that he finally got some recognition. He produced excellent scores like Charlie Wilson’s War, The Lookout and Michael Clayton and the people have voted. In fairness, when you see the other nominees Steve Jablonsky, Michael Giacchino, Patrick Doyle and John Debney they kind of screwed this one up. Where is Mr. Mark Isham? How is it possible to leave him out after maybe his best year ever with excellent score after score. Very strange stuff indeed.

pirates of the caribbean

The winner of this year’s Most Memorable Theme is “Title/Love Theme” from “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” composed by Hans Zimmer. There is just one big problem here, there are no themes called that. They explain that Will and Elizabeth finally gets a love theme within various cues on the score. That may be true, but I feel this category name is misleading and fishy at best. I hope they fix that by next year.

So this was the last award show for a while (I think). I will probably do a recap of it all soon, because it has been a lot to take in. I feel like I have been posting about these awards since the beginning of January. I hope 2008 will be a wonderful year for scores and soundtracks so that the awards next year are even better.
