John Williams… We miss you!

John Williams, having no scores released in 2007 is hard for anyone who loves movie scores and he was awarded the Disappearing Composer Award at the CUE awards. James Horner, Elliot Goldenthal and Trevor Rabin was also nominated and to tell you the truth, I missed them all. Luckily we’ll hear from all of them this year except perhaps Elliot Goldenthal.

The rat has been awarded Best Score on Album. Perhaps a little surprising win in this category, as I feel it works really well in the movie, but listening to it outside of it can be a little daunting. Nonetheless congratulations to Michael Giacchino.

Stardust composed by Ilan Eshkeri keeps picking up awards and this time for Best Score on Film. Guess what, I totally approve. Absolutely amazing in the movie. The only thing I found surprising was that Jonny Greenwood’s score for There Will Be Blood wasn’t even nominated. That would have given Stardust a run for it’s money.

Congratulations to Lair composed by John Debney to finally get awarded Best Score for Video Game. This has to be up there with John Debney’s best movie efforts and if this is the future of game scores (I hope it is), then I say game on!

Bear McCreary gets an award for Best Television Score with Battlestar Galactica Season 3. I’m not sure why this won, because after listening to season 1 and 2 scores, you had to be disappointed with this one. The category was a little weak this year as I would love to see The Tudors by Trevor Morris get some recognition. As for the nominees this year, perhaps Dexter by Rolfe Kent and Daniel Licht should have won.

The rat does it again, this time for Best Score in an Animated Movie. The score was good, no doubt about it, but my favorite score for an animated movie last year was Surf’s Up by Mychael Danna closely followed by Bee Movie by Rupert-Gregson-Williams. None of these were nominated however.
I’ll keep you updated on the CUE awards as they are presented. Some big awards coming up including Best Action Score and Record Label of the Year.

Haha yeah, I should have mentioned some… my bad
Yeah about Greenwood. I don’t think he was disqualified here because anything goes at the CUE awards, but perhaps the score missed some deadline I’m not aware of. Must be…
Watch Stardust immediately! Great movie, and you’ll definitively notice the score.

Lair is actually a video game for PS3 I believe. Check out the score if you can. It’s amazing for a video game.

I love the movies that John Williams produces the score. I’m pretty sure he did the Jurassic Park score.

Stardust is great indeed. John Williams HAS to be doing Indy 4 later this year, right?

Jean: You are absolutely right. He did produce that score and it turned out pretty great!
Daniel: Yep, luckily he is scoring for Indy 4. Can’t wait to hear that one.

Well I just watched Ratatouille again on dvd, and the score is even better than I originally thought: I love the Rat!

Yep, the score is amazing in the movie. I still think it’s good outside of it, just not good enough to be in my regular playlist (but that might change in the future)

I love John Williams! He is such a talented composer, and I can’t imagine what the movies would be like without his scores. What would the world do without the (Star Wars) Imperial March?

Agreed! Imperial March is just one of those immortal songs which will stand the test of time and then some.

What scores has John Williams done in the past, i’ve never heard of him….
The Rat deserved to win there, and I never saw Stardust - I think it is strange Jonny Greenwood was not even nominated, the guy is a genius!
