Retro Wednesday: The John Hughes Special

john hughes

John Hughes is one of those names that will forever remind you of the 80s. He wrote some of the best movies including Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Cub, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Of course with great movies like that, there is great music. Enjoy some clips and videos from those movies.

Spandau Ballet - True (Sixteen Candles)

Simple Minds - Don’t You (Forget About Me) (The Breakfast Club)

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science (Weird Science)

OMD - If You Leave (Pretty in Pink)

Yello - Oh Yeah (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

Considering I’m not having the best day, this post is awesome.

Mikey Filmmaker’s last blog post..P.T. Anderson in Filmmaker Magazine

The one I am most familiar with is Ferris Bueller. I think overall it’s a great soundtrack, with my favorites being the song that plays when they’re in the museum (an all-time favorite scene) and the transition music that plays when they’re showing shots of downtown Chicago. And Yello’s song is a classic….chickichicka.

Mikey: Hehe, happy to help.

Fletch: My favorite is The Breakfast Club. I just laughed when I saw the video. Great song too. Oh yeah, Yello’s song is definitely a classic. I must see those movies again, I miss them like old friends.

Ah, classic stuff. All of which I’ve played on more than one occasion on the Speaker Box. Perhaps one of these days I’ll put it all together and make a feature show.

Yeeeah! Please do it Bo! As far as I am concerned, these great classics can’t be seen or heard enough of.

Ironically, the leader of Oingo Boingo Danny Elfman became quite a film composer himself and did an excellent job with one of his first soundtracks to a little known movie called “Batman” :-)

Also, Ira Newborn is a composer that is as close to John Hughes as John Williams is to Spielberg.

Yep, and Trevor Rabin of “Yes” became quite the composer as well.

Ira Newborn! He did some fun stuff, The Naked Gun, Ace Ventura…
