BAFTA:
In the category Best Music, Christopher Gunning won the sought after award with La Vie En Rose in tough competition with Marc Streitenfeld for American Gangster, Dario Marianelli for Atonement, Alberto Iglesias for The Kite Runner and Jonny Greenwood for There Will Be Blood. Many expected Jonny Greenwood to win after he got snubbed at the Oscars for his excellent score to There Will Be Blood. Dario Marianelli won the Golden Globe award and is nominated for an Academy Award and IFCMA Award.

AMERICAN GANGSTER – Marc Streitenfeld
ATONEMENT – Dario Marianelli
THE KITE RUNNER – Alberto Iglesias
THERE WILL BE BLOOD – Jonny Greenwood
LA VIE EN ROSE – Christopher Gunning
GRAMMY AWARDS:
In the category for Best Compilation Album for Motion Picture, Television or other Media it comes as no surprise that British band The Beatles won the award for the album Love. I think most people “over the pond” will disagree with that decision. My feeling is that most people wanted Once by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova to win this. Other nominees were Across The Universe, Dreamgirls and Hairspray.

Across the Universe
Dreamgirls
Hairspray
Love
Once
In the category for Best Score Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or other Visual Media the rat won. Michael Giacchino’s Ratatouille proved to be too strong for the competition this year. An excellent score it was, and the competition was tough. Grammy Awards operates on a totally different timeline than the Academy Award for example as the nominees were mostly 2006 titles.
The list in full for easy reading (Winner in bold red):
Babel by Gustavo Santaolalla
Blood Diamond by James Newton Howard
The Departed by Howard Shore
Happy Feet by John Powell
Ratatouille by Michael Giacchino
In the category Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media the winner was the song “Love You I Do” by Siedah Garrett, Henry Krieger & Jennifer Hudson from the movie Dreamgirls. No win for Into the Wild or Once.
The list in full for easy reading (Winner in bold red):
“Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova (Once)
“Guaranteed” by Eddie Vedder (Into the Wild)
“Love You I Do” by Siedah Garrett, Henry Krieger & Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)
“The Song of the Heart” by Prince (Happy Feet)
“You Know My Name” by David Arnold & Chris Cornell (Casino Royale)

I wasn’t too surprised, as it is BAFTA because the love to surprise. Who wouldn’t have put money on The Queen or Casino Royale to win last year for example? BAFTA has a history of giving awards to their “own”. Christopher Gunning happens to be British. I see a pattern!
Yes, the Grammy committee are a weird bunch. They decided that 2007 started October 1st 2006 and ended September 30th 2007.

What’s your take on the win for Christopher Gunning? That was a pretty big upset, right?
Also, why are Grammy years off for movie soundtracks - how can Casino Royale, The Departed, Dreamgirls, Ratatouille, and Into the Wild all be in the same year?
