The International Film Music Critics Award nominees for Best Original Score – Documentary Feature are:
Darfur Now by Graeme Revell
Earth by George Fenton
In The Shadow of the Moon by Philip Sheppard
La Planete Blanche by Bruno Coulais
La Premier Cri by Armand Amar
I love documentary scores, there’s such a wide array of topics and the composers create great thematic music. This is a new category as it didn’t exist last year. Here we have 5 different and powerful documentaries and listening to these scores has been a pleasure. This is another strong category and it’s difficult to predict the winner. Darfur Now is a wonderful score by Graeme Revell that I thought was one of the best scores of 2007. It might have snuck in my top 10 list of 2007 if I had listened to it sooner. Sometimes you can be forgiven if you think you are listening to Gladiator or Black Hawk Down score. Earth or Planet Earth is from the BBC series by the same name. It is a double CD filled with great music from around the world. In The Shadow of the Moon is Philip Sheppard’s attempt to reflect Ron howard’s visio
n of the Apollo mission and he does a great job. La Planete Blanche by Bruno Coulais is the wildcard, the weird one out. I’m not sure everyone will like this, and it really is different from the other nominees. La Premier Cri by Armand Amar is a wonderful journey about birth, and his score captivates it so beautifully. There has to be a winner and 4 losers however, and here are my predictions:
- My choice: La Premier Cri by Armand Amar
- Probable winner: In The Shadow of the Moon by Philip Sheppard
