Brian Tyler has been composing for about 10 years now and he proven himself capable of doing most types of scores, but the ones that suits him the most is the action score (War, Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem) or the ethnic score (Children of Dune, Bubba Ho-Tep). My favourite score by him would be Children of Dune and I will be doing a review of that in the future.

Rambo
Release: 25.01.2008
He has 4 movies lined up this year (so far). The first one is of course the new Rambo movie starring Sylvester Stallone. Is anyone else excited about this one? I sure am! There were a few heads turning when Sylvester Stallone announced a new Rocky movie and a new Rambo movie. What’s next? Well I would love to see Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone back in a Tango & Cash sequel. Please Mr. Stallone? Make it happen. We all know that Rocky did pretty well and there’s no reason Rambo shouldn’t. The score is a touchy subject as Jerry Goldsmith who composed for Rocky originally isn’t here to score the new movie. Would he have gotten the job? Probably.
Brian Tyler is extremely talented, but a lot of hardcore Rambo fans could end up disappointed by the score, me included. I think this movie will make or break Brian Tyler’s year, and there are examples of failure and success. Christopher Young messed up the Spider-Man 3 score pretty bad when taking over from Danny Elfman, but John Ottman did the smart thing and followed John Williams footsteps in Superman Returns. I really hope Brian Tyler can pull this off as I know he can do amazing scores. I found this little thing on Youtube. It’s the new Rambo trailer with the Jerry Goldsmith score. Check it out!
Bangkok Dangerous
Release: 17.02.2008
There’s not much information about this Nicolas Cage movie, even though it’s close to the release date. It’s a remake of a 1999 movie by the same name. it’s another movie by the Pang brothers after they went all Hollywood with the horror movie The Eye (As writers, Release: 01.02.2008). The story is that a deaf-mute hitman, portrayed by Nicolas Cage is in Bangkok to do a few jobs when he falls for a local woman. The love for this woman change how he looks at things and he realized that his actions hurt people. Actually, they changed the character, so now he can speak! They thought it was best that Nicolas Cage had some lines, so what they did was transform the woman into a deaf-mute. The score to this movie actually sounds great, at least one song I heard. You can hear it at Brian Tyler’s MySpace page.
The Heaven Project
Release: Later this year
The synopsis for this is: A harrowing and frightening thriller about a man who has everything he’s ever loved stripped away from him; and to earn his life and family back, he must face obstacles of mystical origins, endure countless tests of his faith, struggle with his own sanity, and explore the depth and the power of his soul. Starring Paul Walker, this seems to be a run-of-the-mill thriller. Should be an easy score for Brian Tyler, but I hope he doesn’t get lazy like he did with Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem. It’s too early to tell what it can be at this stage.
The Killing Room
Release: Later this year
Directed by Jonathan Liebesman who’s done a few horror movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Darkness Falls. This movie starring Peter Stormare is about four individuals who sign up for a psychological research study only to discover that they are now subjects of a brutal, classified government program. It’s classified as a thriller, but it can easily be a horror. In the past, Brian Tyler has composed for Vampires: Los Muertos and incidentally Darkness Falls. Neither of these scores were great ones, but typical horror scores. Granted, it is extremely difficult to make good music for horror movies that doesn’t sound like 60+ minutes of random noise when you hear it on your stereo, but it can be done. Check out The Shining by Wendy Carlos, a horror score that I feel have yet to be beaten.
So there you have it folks, the Brian Tyler preview of 2008. Now go get your sweatbands and practice Rambo poses in front of the mirror. He’s back!
