My first taste of movie scores happened back in 1994. I remember that it was winter and a friend of mine was driving me home from school. As the conversation went quiet, I heard something that changed my life. Coming out of the car speakers was this beautiful sound which I had not heard before. It was sort of a blend between Enigma and classical music and I absolutely fell in love with it. It was the score to 1492: Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis, the 1992 movie which at that point I had not even seen.
I asked my friend about it, but he didn’t know much, except that he got this as a gift. 2 days later I bought it and was listening to it on the stereo when my mom came in. Like me, she fell in love with it and I bought it to her as a Christmas gift that year. I didn’t even have internet at that point so I had no idea there was a whole world of movie scores out there, but I got occasional highlights, especially themes like Superman, Terminator 2. It wasn’t until I got a broadband connection in 1998 that I really started exploring. Napster and Audio Galaxy was really a friend in need at that point, and saved me from the top 40 crowd.
I went on from there, and I am really happy with my collection now. It contains 812 scores currently and growing on a weekly basis.
So what was your first movie score?

My first score was that of the film Thirteen and Lost In Translation. It watched them both on the same day, and for the first time looked deeper into the medium of film, the first time I noticed things like the score, cinematography, art direction etc. They were both interesting score, but Lost In Translation’s was better. It wasn’t that long ago that these films were released, but I was 12 when I saw them, so it is understandable why they are the first scores I noticed.

it’s interesting. For my big sister it was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and for my neighbor it was Lethal Weapon 2.
